Dog portraits in East Devon

For those with big personalities, lovable quirks and the occasional good sit. Taken in the studio, outdoors or a bit of both.

Dogs and their characters have a way of becoming part of everyday life. The walks, the ecstatic greetings, the odd habits and the familiar, knowing looks. Somehow, they go from puppy to elderly statesman without us really noticing, but the things that make them unmistakably them always remain.

That's what I want to photograph. Not just what your dog looks like, but something of who they are right now. The wonky ear, the raised eyebrow, the ridiculous expression you've seen a thousand times.

A really good portrait should simply feel like your dog. Worth properly printing, framing and putting on the wall where you can enjoy it.

Choose the session that suits your dog & the photographs you want.

Every dog is different, so the session should be different too. Some dogs are happiest in a quiet studio with simple light and no distractions. Others need open air, movement and familiar ground.

Option one

Studio Dog Portraits

What to expect

Simple, pared-back portraits with nowhere for the personality to hide. Clean backgrounds and controlled light keep all the attention on your dog — their expression, shape and character. Occasionally something simple added in, but never over-staged.

Best for

Dogs who can manage a moment of stillness, the occasional sit or stay, and anyone looking for a clean, striking portrait for the wall.

[Clean Backgrounds] [Owners included] [Calm & quiet pace]

Option two

Outdoor Dog Portraits

What to expect

Natural light, more space and the outdoors as our backdrop. Sessions are less staged and give your dog a little more freedom to settle, explore and be themselves. We'll still make portraits along the way, just with the landscape and surroundings becoming part of the photograph.

Best for

Dogs who feel most at home outside, whether that's woodland, open fields, the coast or even a large back garden.

[For energetic dogs] [Owners included] [Countryside]

Ready when they are.

Outdoor sessions can be arranged throughout the year, subject to availability and a reasonably cooperative forecast.

Studio portraits take place on selected Studio Days in East Devon. Tell me you're interested and roughly when you'd like your photographs taken, and I'll let you know about the next suitable date.

Whichever you choose, your dog doesn't need to perform, pose perfectly or be off the lead. We'll plan around their temperament and work at their pace.

The whole process is kept calm and simple. Your dog does not need to perform, pose perfectly or be off the lead. We plan around their temperament and work at their pace.

How it works

01

Tell me about your dog

Their name, age and a little about what they're like. Tell me whether you're leaning towards studio or outdoors - or say if you haven't a clue. I can help with that bit.

02

We'll find the right session

For outdoor portraits, we'll choose a location and find a date that works. If you'd like studio portraits, I'll add you to the next suitable Studio Day and be in touch as soon as dates are available.

03

Come as you are

There's no expectation that your dog will suddenly become perfectly behaved for the occasion. We give them time to settle, work at their pace and make the most of whatever personality turns up on the day.

04

Choose what belongs on the wall

After the session, you'll see a carefully edited gallery of the best photographs. Choose your favourites and how you'd like to have them printed and framed.

Made to be printed

Finished portraits, not forgotten files

These portraits are created with finished artwork in mind. As well as digital images, I can provide professional prints and framed pieces, prepared properly rather than left sitting on a hard drive.

Each chosen image is individually edited, checked and finished with care. If you choose a framed piece, I can help you select a size and style that suits the photograph and your home.

A few common questions

Most owners worry that their dog will not sit still, will need to stay on a lead, or will be too excitable. That is all normal, and it can be worked around.

Does my dog need to be well trained?

No. A sit and stay can help, but it is not essential. We work around your dog rather than expecting them to perform.

Can my dog stay on the lead?

Yes. Many dogs are photographed on lead for safety. Where suitable, leads can often be removed from selected finished images.

What if my dog is nervous?

That is absolutely fine. We take things slowly and give them time. Outdoor sessions can be a good choice for dogs who feel more relaxed with space around them.

Can I be in the photographs too?

Yes. Some of the most meaningful portraits include the relationship between dog and owner. You do not have to be in every image, but you are very welcome to be included.
